The Mission of Medicine Introduction
'Among the eight kinds of sufferings in life, illness is the most
tortuous.' With many years of experience in helping the poor and
the sick, Master Cheng Yen realized that 'sickness created poverty
and poverty created sickness'; both were linked in a vicious cycle.
That situation was particularly evident in Eastern Taiwan where,
because of the surrounding geology, transportation was limited
and medical resources were inadequate. Oftentimes, a minor sickness
would become a major one and, as a result, many people lost their
lives needlessly.
In order to relieve the pain and suffering due to poverty and illness,
Master Cheng Yen vowed to build a hospital in Hualien. With neither
fund nor land in hand, but only the conviction that 'a field
of blessings awaits the cultivation by all benevolent people in
the world, and
ten thousand lotus hearts of compassion create the world of Tzu
Chi', after 7 years of public appeal and periods of obstacles and
setbacks,
'a hospital that safeguards the health and lives of people' was
finally established. Because of Master Cheng Yen’s untiring resolve,
many
people were touched and gathered to form a stream of love --
the kindness and compassion in people were aroused and a suitable
site
for the hospital was located, funds were raised and medical personnel
were recruited.
During the past 17 years of service, Tzu Chi Hospital has always
adhered to its original mission of 'respecting, saving, and caring
for all lives'. Tzu Chi medical care is patient-oriented, which means
patients come first. In addition, the medical mission has extended
into the local communities, providing home care and medical services.
Through an island-wide medical network and the establishment of Tzu
Chi International Medical Association (TIMA), this never-ending love
is able to reach out to the dark corners of the world. |
